The 8th edition of The Venice Glass Week, titled #AWorldofGlass, takes place from September 14th to 22nd, 2024, and is a true celebration of the artistry and tradition of glassmaking. First launched in 2017, this internationally renowned festival is dedicated to showcasing the rich history and dynamic future of the Venetian glass industry, particularly the iconic Murano glass.

This year, over 230 organizations will host 250 unique events across Venice, Murano, and Mestre. The festival offers a remarkable array of activities: visitors can explore artistic glass exhibitions, interactive installations, and attend workshops, conferences, and demonstrations in renowned glass furnaces. Many events are free, offering a wonderful opportunity for all to engage with glass in new and exciting ways. From prestigious museums and cultural institutions to local artisans and vetrerie, the event unites glass enthusiasts, collectors, and industry professionals from around the globe.

Highlights and New Additions

The 2024 edition introduces exciting new initiatives, such as a partnership with the Michelangelo Foundation as part of Homo Faber, an esteemed exhibition focusing on contemporary craftsmanship, held at the Giorgio Cini Foundation until September 30th. Another standout feature of the festival is the Glass Bateo, a vaporized exhibition that will traverse the canals of Venice for the festival’s duration. One of the ACTV vaporetto boats will be transformed into a floating gallery, offering onboard exhibitions, events, and encounters aimed at expanding public appreciation of Murano’s artistic glass.

For runners and fans of fitness, the beloved Fornaci Running Race, a race that winds through the glass furnaces of Venice and Murano, adds an element of spirited competition to the festival.

The Legacy of Venetian Glass

Murano’s glassmaking tradition dates back over 700 years and remains an integral part of Venice’s cultural heritage. Murano glass is celebrated worldwide for its craftsmanship, elegance, and creativity. Over centuries, this delicate art has evolved but never lost its authenticity. The Venice Glass Week is a brilliant showcase of this historical craft, reminding locals and visitors alike of its enduring significance in Venetian culture.

Through exhibitions, open furnaces, and immersive workshops, visitors are invited to witness the masterful techniques of Murano artisans firsthand. Beyond the intricate beauty of the works themselves, the event also highlights the complex history of glass production, its innovations, and its global influence on the world of art and design.
